2014 INTERIOR DESIGN & MURAL COMMISSION FOR RESORT BUNGALOW
THE BLUE LAGOON RESORT
- KOH CHANG, THAILAND
A retreat of river to ocean walkways, off-season isolation and cheerful management, populated by a curious assortment of creatures: ducks, hedgehogs, an intrepid backpack-wearing puppy named Pad Thai, this was a vacation that begat a job that became a tribute. I was asked to makeover a newly renovated bungalow of the Blue Lagoon Resort on the island of Koh Chang, Thailand. To the right you will find before & after photos, as well as the original proposal mock-up I submitted to the resort owner. The blue & white flower pattern that dominates three walls is inspired by this Marc Jacobs shirt, his pattern on this dress is seen on the bench, and the red & black palm tree pattern that backgrounds the bookcase is from this Yves Saint Laurent shirt. Bringing some frivolous, oversized, high fashion patterns to a private bungalow of an out-there beach on a moderately popular Thai island is what happens when they tell you to do whatever you want.
In addition to the handpainted acrylic mural, the side table base was given a matching coat of paint. The slack and uneven clotheslines that hovered over the bench alcove providing closet space were made over as a cascading duo, the old bamboo pole painted white and hung from rainbow tie-dyed hemp rope. I have always been a sucker for bungee cords, I just think they come in the greatest colours. I chose a silvery blue with red, braided it tight and looped the ends, this became the other half of the new clothesline. A new graphic rug dots the entryway. All supplies and materials were sourced from the local hardware store.
My long journey cut short, I was called home by a deep loss. Endeavouring to complete the space before departure, the repetitive painting of white flowers was, to be sure, mildly therapeutic. My time at the Blue Lagoon is dedicated to my late Tita, my Auntie Ca. The resort owner provides a small info board to fill out, I named this bungalow Hija, which means daughter, because that is what she called me. May people speak her name. Amen
